How the calculator decides
The biggest factor is reading distance. Sign makers use a simple rule of thumb: for the strongest impact, plan about 1 inch of letter height for every 10 feet of viewing distance. Letters can still be read at up to about 30 feet per inch, but they stop grabbing attention long before that.
From the letter height, the calculator works out how much room your headline needs. Bold banner fonts run about six-tenths as wide as they are tall, so a 13-character headline in 5-inch letters needs roughly 40 inches of width before margins. It adds room for your smaller lines and a clear border, then picks the smallest standard banner size that fits. If you give it a space limit, it stays inside that and tells you how readable the result will be.
Letter height by viewing distance
| Viewing distance | Best-impact letter height | Still legible at |
|---|---|---|
| 10 ft | 1–2 in | up to 30–60 ft |
| 25 ft | 3 in | up to 90 ft |
| 50 ft | 5 in | up to 150 ft |
| 100 ft | 10 in | up to 300 ft |
| 200 ft | 20 in | up to 600 ft |
| 300 ft | 30 in | up to 900 ft |
Picking the material
- 13oz standard vinyl is the right choice for most events, parties, storefront promotions, and indoor use.
- 18oz heavy-duty vinyl is thicker and tougher. Choose it for banners that stay up outdoors for months, or when the banner must read from both sides.
- Mesh is perforated so wind passes through. It's the standard for fences, scaffolding, and windy spots, especially on larger banners.
